Seven members of Troop 458 completed a 70 plus mile trek at Philmont Scout Ranch in July 2014.  There were many highlights.  The group traveled by car pool to St. Louis, Missouri, where they boarded Amtrak train for Philmont.  For most of the guys, it was their first time on a train. At Philmont, they were met by a Philmont ranger who helped them through check-in and hiked with them the first two day completing trail training.

The group hiked over Mt. Waite Phillips, the second highest mountain at Philmont, saw the wreckage of an airplane crash from over 50 years ago on Trail Peak.  Their last day on the trail, they climbed the Tooth of Time, the symbol of Philmont.  For completing the trek, each received the coveted Philmont Arrowhead Award.

The most common thing we hear from guys after a Philmont trip is four words – “I Wanna Go Back” and we are making tentative plans to return to Philmont in 2017.  We are looking at other high adventure opportunities, including the The Summit Bechtel Scouting Reserve in West Virginia in 2016.
